This is one subject that just does not get lost. Why is it a seemingly never ending subject? What with all the technological, biomedical, and various scientific advancements in the past few decades, why can we not seem to get a handle on something as basic as body weight?
I realize that the word “basic” may be a bit light considering all the variables involved with each individual’s health but we humans have been studying and manipulating this phe’nom for a very long time. I for one have had plenty of experience with various weight loss methods. The very best one or I should say the one that worked the best of all, simply was not practical for everyday life. In about 8 weeks I lost almost all of my excess fat. I went down 3 inches in my waist area and I felt absolutely great. I hadn’t been in that good of shape since high school. I didn’t really appreciate it at the time. I hadn’t really intended on ‘getting in shape’. I just got drafted into the army and thrown into basic training. I ate all the carbs and fats I could and still managed to work off all excess. Yes, I discovered a fitness program that really worked but, for me, once was enough.
I realize that not everyone is going to be built the same. We have genetics to consider which are very difficult to change. Many of the men and a few of the women, in my family tree are and were built like your basic tree stump. Getting taller was and is not an option. Just a few pounds gained in a short person causes a rounding effect which I don’t care for. When I couldn’t keep my pants buttoned and my belt was at the last hole I decided to lose weight again. I was out of the army and not ever going back. I also wasn’t going back to North Carolina in July and August and run in the sand all day. So, it was diet time.
I was going to college at that time. I did take a physical education class but that wasn’t really helping. I started studying various diets and ‘methods of the time’ for losing excess body fat. I read a book written by a new and rising diet star named Dr Atkins. I decided to go for it 100%. This plan actually worked very well as far as weight loss goes. I got to eat all the meat and fats that I wanted and I didn’t have an exercise routine. I lost 30 pounds in about 2 months. I am sure however, that if I went any longer without bread, potatoes and Ice Cream I would have committed a crime of a horrible nature. The magical diet just withered on the vine and I gained the weight back over the next 6 months.
In the years since then I have tried quite a few different diets. Some involved physical exercise and some didn’t. I have lived a yo-yo sort of physical life, by this I mean all the different forms of exercise I have utilized. I have learned that finding a way to lose weight and feel good about myself is very difficult. It is better for me to feel good about myself and then decide if I wish to lose weight. If I am not willing or able to eat well balanced nutritious meals and forgoing the extra helpings of the foods I dearly love, i.e. ice cream, cookies, cake and fudge etc., then I had best learn how to work around it. I continue to study the subject and I do go to the gym at least 3 times a week. I do not eat the way I should all the time but I do try to practice moderation with my sweet tooth. These tactics help some but I need something else, and I have found some answers that work.
